Volunteer Computer Instructor for Adult Residents of Venice Community Housing

VCH is currently seeking a volunteer to serve as a basic skills computer instructor for residents who live in our buildings.


The Computer Instructor will teach a basic course in a small community room setting (computers provided). Classes will be held in the evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. (some scheduling flexibility). The Computer Instructor is expected to:

  • Teach one or two basic skills computer classes per week
    • Email
    • Internet research
    • Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Prepare lessons to be taught in each session
  • Keep attendance records via sign-in sheets of residents who attend the classes
  • Report problems or challenges to the program staff


Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred. A background in computer technology, education or related field is preferred. Relevant work experience is acceptable substitution for degree. Background check may be required.

Venice YouthBuild is a program of Venice Community Housing that provides low-income 18-24 year olds the opportunities to obtain their high school diplomas and receive vocational training while becoming leaders in their lives and communities.

Venice YouthBuild is currently seeking volunteers to tutor students in Math and English, volunteer as mentors in the Career Center, support Service Day events, lead recreational activities and offer classroom assistance. Volunteers will be required to sign in and out and will report to the AmeriCorps Coordinator.

1) CAHSEE Math or English Tutors
- Tutor individuals and small groups to prepare them for the Math or English California High School Exit Exam (M-W, 10-11:30am).
- Track student progress on the Volunteer Sign-In Sheet.

2) Career Center Volunteers
- Update job, career and college opportunities on our internal website and job boards (Th, 12-2pm).
- Mentor and support students with job searches, mock interviewing and career advice (M-F, 2-3:30pm).
- Track student progress on the Volunteer Sign-In Sheet.

3) Community Service Event Volunteers
- Join us on Service Fridays to help expand our impact (F, 7:30am-2:30pm).
- Role model volunteerism and professionalism while supporting student leadership.
- Offer any recommendations for community service activities to staff.

4) Teacher Assistants
- Assist staff with duties such as filing, copying and organizing.
- Volunteer in the classroom at least once a week, assist students with classwork and help promote program values and policies (M-Th, 7:30-11:30am, M-Th, 11:30-2pm).

5) Extra Curricular Volunteers
- Support student elective groups as a mentor or workshop facilitator. Areas of interest include art, gardening, music, athletics, cooking, construction and community advocacy. (Scheduled during M-F 7:30AM-3:30PM)

Young Professionals Board Members

Venice Community Housing Young Professionals Board, raises awareness and support for VCH's vital services by organizing and participating in volunteer and outreach events throughout the year. We currently have a board of 12 who meet monthly to plan events and opportunities to become involved with VCH and our community. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated and philanthropic-minded young people to network, practice leadership, and support their community
