Venice YouthBuild

Venice YouthBuild moves at-risk youth into productive and self-sufficient futures through a comprehensive secondary education and job training program.

One in five Los Angeles youth, ages 16-24, is out of school and out of work. One in three students in Los Angeles drops out of high school, and Venice High School is no exception. Venice YouthBuild helps out of school and out of work youth who struggle with poverty, gang affiliation, drug abuse, young parenthood, and other barriers to employment transition into successful, self-sufficient adulthoods.

Venice YouthBuild helps at-risk youth transition into productive adulthoods through:
  • Individualized High School Instruction at VCHC’s John Muir Charter School, giving participants another chance to earn their high school diploma.
  • Job Skills Classes, teaching students basic job skills and safety practices, with an emphasis on skills valuable to the construction and high growth "green" industries.
  • Work Experience, allowing participants to gain valuable work experience on real construction sites while building or rehabilitating affordable housing.
  • Leadership Development and Community Service projects, helping participants take pride in themselves and their communities.
  • Career Guidance, helping participants into careers and higher education through career counseling, job-readiness training, and job placement.

Venice YouthBuild is part of a national model, YouthBuild USA.

Green Employment Training
Venice Youthbuild’s Green Employment Training helps today’s at-risk youth become tomorrow’s much needed Green workforce.

Venice YouthBuild began Green Employment Training in November 2008 to increase at-risk youth’s environmental awareness, teach “Green” job skills, and “Green” Venice and the surrounding areas by offering:
  • Green Education - To increase youths' awareness of environmental issues, Venice YouthBuild incorporates a green curriculum into high school instruction.
  • Green Job Skills Training - To prepare youth for gainful employment in high growth Green industries, participants receive job training in Green skills such as solar panel installation and weatherization.
  • Green Work Experience - Participants green Venice and help VCHC save on utility costs through real-world work experience installing solar panels and/or weatherizing VCHC’s affordable housing and other buildings.
  • Green Community Service - Environmental awareness and the value of giving back to the community are be reinforced through green community service projects. Past community service projects have included a trip to Eco Helpers in the Santa Monica Mountains to restore the natural environment by planting 100 native plants.
