

Study Lounge
VCHC began operating Study Lounge in February of 2009.
Study Lounge is an academic focused after school program that focuses on providing academic assistance to students from ages 6 -17 who reside in VCHC buildings and in the surrounding community. The program’s goal is to help students engage in the education process and improve their school performance outcomes. VCHC Study Lounge works to build community by collaborating with other youth services organizations to help youth improve their grades, increase their school attendance, decrease disciplinary problems, and make positive changes in outlook and self-esteem.
Program Locations:
The program is currently located at three sites:
- Washington Courts: Kid’s Academy 12525 Washington Courts Los Angeles, CA. 90066 This site serves students from 6 to 11 years old.
- Tabor Courts: Teen Academy 345 4th Ave Venice, CA. 90291 This site serves students from 12 – 17 years old.
- Mark Twain Middle School: 2224 Walgrove Ave LA. CA. 90066 This sites serves 8th graders who need tutorial assistance in Language Arts and Math. Mark Twain Program times are Wednesdays 3:15 – 4:15 in classroom 128, and Thursdays 3:15 – 4:15 in room 137.
Program Times:
Monday – Friday 3:00PM – 5:30PM During the school year.
Summer Camps program times: Monday – Friday 1:00PM – 5:30PM. Summer 2010 camp schedule to be announced.
Program Services:
Recognizing that the paths to academic achievement and student success are many, we offer a host of other activities and services that include but are not limited to the following:
• Academic Case Management : which includes homework assistance, tutoring, and student advocacy: We focus on working with students, parents, and teachers to ensure that we are targeting academic areas that need the most attention.
• Enrichment Activities: We provide a variety of activities and courses that are geared toward helping students build skills through creative activities. Some classes have included: Photovoice, Dance, Creative writing, financial literacy, and many others.
• Career Exploration Field Trips: Our career exploration field trips are aimed at exposing student to various career tracks. These trips have included visits toLA Times, LA Superior Court, LA Federal Reserve Bank, various college campus tours, and many others.
• Fun Field trips: These field trips are aimed at increasing students’ exposure and awareness: Disneyland, Dodger games, Six Flags, Ice Skating. Long Beach Aquarium and many others.
• Recreational Activities: These activities are to help student become more aware of the healthy benefits of physical activity. Capoiera Martial Arts, swimming, yoga activities, and many others.
• Community Engagement Activities: These activities are used to help student find ways to give back, contribute, to get involved in their community. Beach cleaning projects, feeding the homeless, and gift wrapping activities during the holidays.
• Summer Camps: camp activities are designed to help students continue to engage in the learning process during out of school time.
