Formed in 1988 by grassroots activists interested in preserving affordable housing in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, Venice Community Housing Corporation (VCHC) has grown to a comprehensive community development corporation with family support programs, gang prevention programs, job training and affordable housing. VCHC owns and manages 195 units of affordable housing, including a 32-bed transitional housing facility for homeless women and their children. Additionally VCHC operates YouthBuild, a job training and transitional employment program for “at risk” youth, a gang-diversion program for middle school youth, an after school arts and education program for elementary school children, and a home repair program for low income elderly or disabled home owners. Today, the organization has a 32-person staff and an operating budget over $3 million.

YOUTHBUILD CONSTRUCTION TRAINER-TEMPORARY POSITION
Venice Community Housing Corporation

The Construction Trainer reports directly to the YouthBuild Director.  He/she is responsible for on-the-job training for at-risk young adults ages 16-24.  Trainees receive paid, on-the-job construction skills training on affordable housing projects owned by VCHC or by another organization.

Essential Functions
  • Supervise and teach 7-10 youth skills in the construction and building trades, including but not limited to framing, drywall, rough and finish carpentry, painting, use of tools, safety and other relevant skills.
  • Responsible for implementing and/or creating a structured curriculum teaching basic construction skills, to be used prior and in between job assignments.
  • Conduct weekly evaluations, share feedback with trainees and make recommendations for salary increases for trainees.
  • Teach construction skills through demonstrations, ensure safety of youth, and set standards for appropriate behavior for youth while on the job site.
  • Track attendance and submit time sheets on a daily basis to the YouthBuild Director.
  • Enforce YouthBuild program policies and procedures, including holding youth accountable for violating policies and communicating to support staff for follow up services.
  • Conduct construction voc-ed sessions and projects in woodshop on program site.
  • Participate in program planning, recruitment, orientation, and case review of youth.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the YouthBuild staff, and attend staff meetings, and YouthBuild conferences, including some out of town national events.
  • Work on other VCHC construction projects, as needed or as planned, under the direction of the YouthBuild Director.  This work may entail supervision of work crews and subcontractors, as well as hands on work in demolition, carpentry, drywall and other trades.
  • Act as a mentor and positive role model to at-risk youth in the program and assist in job placement for eligible students.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The candidate must have at least five years experience in building rehabilitation and construction, including plan reading, material estimating, supervising crews, general knowledge of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and other trades.  Must be computer literate.  A valid California Driver's License and proof of insurance is required.
Desire and aptitude for working with youth 16-24 years old; prior experience with the YouthBuild Program a plus.
Excellent communication skills and be able to work well with youth, staff, and community partners.

Salary
This is a temporary position.  $35,000-$40,000 annually depending on experience and qualifications plus benefits including medical, dental, vacation, sick time, 12 holidays and 2 personal days.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM VOLUNTEER

The Venice Community Housing Corporation (VCHC) is a community-based, non-profit organization that has been providing affordable housing and a variety of community development programs to low-income residents of Venice and Mar Vista for 20 years.

VCHC is currently seeking volunteers for our Study Lounge After-School Program to assist with various program projects and activities. Study Lounge is an academic based after -school program geared toward providing academic assistance to residents in VCHC buildings and in the surrounding community. The program’s goal is to help students engage in the education process and improve their school performance outcomes.  Volunteer opportunities include but are not limited to: education coordinator, instructor, after school tutor, field trip chaperone, incentive store assistant, enrichment activity assistant, event set up, and workshop facilitators (photography workshop, graphic arts workshop, inspirational workshop, etc.)

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

Study Lounge volunteer(s) will assist the program staff with program activities.  Volunteers who work with Study Lounge program are expected to:
  • Be able to commit at least 1 ½ hours to each shift assignment.
  • Work with students in a supportive manner.
  • Report problems or challenges to staff immediately.
  • Provide homework assistance in a variety of academic courses: language arts, math, science, history, etc.
  • Available to volunteer for one or more of the following semester intervals: January – June, July – August, September – December
  • Display good judgment.
  • Participate in the development of new and existing workshops.
  • Supervise students in a manner that encourages them to continue program participation.
  • Enforce program rules, regulation, and standards.
  • Participate in a quarterly training meeting.

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have the desire to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM VOLUNTEER EDUCATION COORDINATOR
Study Lounge Program

The Venice Community Housing Corporation (VCHC) is a community-based, non-profit organization that has been providing affordable housing and a variety of community development programs to low-income residents of Venice and Mar Vista for 20 years.

VCHC is currently seeking a volunteer to serve as our education coordinator for our Study Lounge After-School program. Study Lounge is an academic based after -school program geared toward providing academic assistance to residents in VCHC buildings and in the surrounding community. The program’s goal is to help students engage in the education process and improve their school performance outcomes. 

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

The volunteer education coordinator will assist the program director and program staff, and other program volunteers with helping students meet their academic goals.  The education coordinator is expected to:

  • Work with program director, program staff, parents, students, and teachers, to ensure effective communication between all involved in the students’ support team. Students enrolled in Study Lounge attend the following schools: Grand View, Broadway, and Beethoven elementary schools: Mark Twain and Westside Leadership Academy middle schools: Venice and Animo of Venice high schools, as well as other schools. The Education Coordinator is to be the communication liaison for all groups.
  • Collect assignments lists and distribute information to all program staff.
  • Ensure that students who attend the Study Lounge are using their time to complete projects that teachers have assigned.
  • Follow up with teachers to determine if students are completing their assignments and that their academic goals are being met.
  • Keeping parents informed of students progress in school and in the program.
  • Work with teachers, program staff, volunteers, parents, and students in a professional and supportive manner.
  • Report problems or challenges to the program director.
  • Must be high energy, creative, motivated, and a self starter.
  • Available to volunteer for one or more of the following semester intervals:  January – June, July – August, September – December
  • The after school program takes place between the hours of 3:00pm – 6:00pm but it is expected that the education coordinator will work some hours during the morning and in the early afternoon, as that’s when school personnel are available for consultation.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred.  A background in education or related field is preferred. Relevant work experience is acceptable substitution for degree. It is preferred that the volunteer for this position be familiar with LAUSD academic curriculum and standards. This is an ideal opportunity for an education intern looking for experience working with a school/community based program.
